Stirring High Wheelers Victory 13-6
Yolo High Wheelers (16-16) second baseman Bobby Lada (8) went four-for-five with a two-run homer and seven RBI's as he helped lead the visitors to a 13-6 win over the Idaho Falls Chukars (14-21) on Saturday at Melalecua Field on Saturday. It was Lada's fourth four-hit game this season. The seven RBI's match Brayland Skinner for most in one game by a High Wheeler. Yolo finished with 17 hits.
Lada drove home his first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. In the fifth he gave Yolo a 3-1 lead on a two-run double to left.
Idaho Falls was down 3-1 going to the fifth and struck for four runs on five hits. Four of the hits were consecutive doubles by first baseman Brett Barrera, third baseman Jose Gonzalez (RBI), center fielder Tyler Wyatt (RBI), and pinch hitter Trevor Rogers (two RBI's). The other run came on a single by catcher Craig Corliss which made it 5-3 Chukars.
The High Wheelers were down 6-4 going to the seventh. Shortstop Braylin Marine reached on a fielding error by Chuckars second baseman Brandon Bohning. That opened the door for Lada who belted a game-tying homer to left.
"Seven RBIs is great but we got the win and that's all that matters. Shout out my guy Brayland Skinner now that I have matched him for seven in one game," said Lada.
In the eighth, Yolo took the lead for good scoring six times. The first six batters had singles: third baseman Kirkland Banks, catcher Mason Minzey, and the center fielder Skinner. That set the table for Marine who delivered the go-ahead hit--a two-run single to center. Immediately after, it was Lada with a two-run single to right and then the first baseman Gonzalez had an infield hit. Gonzalez' single hit off the foot area of Idaho Falls pitcher Sam Downs (0-1). The ball caromed to third baseman Roberto Gonzalez who threw the ball away tossing it toward first. As the ball got away it was backed up by Bohning down the right field side and and as he threw the ball toward the infield it got away and Lada scored while Gonzalez ended up at second. Idaho Falls committed five errors. In the series the Chukars have made 13 miscues.
Left-hander Brandon Mitchell started for Yolo and had a no-decision. He allowed eight hits in 4 1/3 innings while issuing three runs (all earned). Jack Zalasky (4-1) pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts securing the win. It was his second win of the series. In each victory this series, he's worked a perfect frame.
Despite the win, Yolo still hasn't solved the mystery of Idaho Falls first baseman Brett Barrera. He has a 12-game hitting streak and in five games against Yolo he's 15-21 (.714) with two homers and five RBI's. In addition, Barrera reached base safely 18 times in this set. Barrera (11) homered on Saturday. His average is .421.
The series stands Idaho Falls 3-2 as the clubs conclude matters tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. PST. Right-hander Ben Ferrer starts for Yolo against righty Caleb Reyes who will make his first professional start.
