Vibes Concede, Hand Yolo 9-4 victory in five innings

Davis, Ca.---The Rocky Mountain Vibes (20-24) walked off the field after five innings conceding a 9-4 victory to the Yolo High Wheelers (22-22) at Dobbins Stadium on Friday.  The visitors met with the umpires and both parties agreed to end the game due to the 100-plus degree conditions.  Rocky Mountain also had a couple of starting players leave due to injury.  The first pitch temperature was 109 after it was 111 the day before.

The High Wheelers scored in four-of-the-five innings with two in the first and second, three in the third, and two in the fifth.  Both first inning runs came on a single by catcher Eddie Niemann.  He finished two-for-three with two RBI's and a run scored.  Through four games with Yolo he's 6-11 with a homer and six RBI's and has reached base safely nine times.

Yolo manager Billy Horton said, "Niemann has been clutch.  He's had big hits for us."

The runs in the second came on a triple by right fielder Justin Kirby, and a wild pitch. Left fielder Jose Gonzalez in the third, chipped in with a two-run single to center and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, Gonzalez led off with a walk and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Kirby while catcher Mason Minzey followed Kirby with a single to center.

Yolo starter Brandon Mitchell gets credit for a complete game.  In five innings, he gave up five hits, four runs (all earned), walked four and struck out five.  It was his second straight win and the first complete game in team history.  The right-hander worked around a first inning run as the Vibes left the bases loaded.

"Mitchell pitched great," said Horton.  "His three middle innings were tremendous, and he was able to minimize the damage."

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.  Right-hander Danny Fox will make his professional debut for Rocky Mountain against Yolo righty Ben Ferrer.
