Two Seven Run Innings & A Yolo Victory

Two Seven Run Innings & A Yolo Victory

Colorado Springs, Co.---UCHealth Park is known for crazy games with an elevation of about 6,500.  And the first two innings lived up to that as each team within that span had a seven-run frame.  However, in the end the Yolo High Wheelers (31-28; 8-5) defeated the Rocky Mountain Vibes (27-32; 5-8) 12-8 on Tuesday night.  The High Wheelers are 2-2 on the 21-game road trip.

Yolo flexed its muscle, scoring seven times in the first.  Center fielder Brayland Skinner walked to open the contest.  He stole second (team-high 28th) and two batters later, second baseman Bobby Lada singled him home with the game's first run.  Eleven batters came up while five walked against Rocky Mountain starter Erik Johnson who lasted 1/3 of an inning.  Designated hitter Eddie Niemann had an RBI single, and following him third baseman Braedon Blackford, and right fielder David Glancy had bases loaded walks making it 4-0.  Johnson was removed after Glancy's plate appearance and Rocky Mountain summoned Zach Ottinger (1-5).  High Wheelers catcher Edwin DeLaCruz ripped a two-run single to right scoring Niemann and Blackford which made it six runs home.  Skinner came up again and concluded the scoring with high chopper (ground out) to second scoring Glancy.

However, Rocky Mountain bounced back with a run in the first against Yolo left-handed starter Brandon Mitchell.  In the second, it was the Vibes turn for a seven-run outburst which started on a walk to left fielder Trevor Halsema.  Former High Wheeler catcher Mason Minzey followed with a single.  First baseman Dane Tofteland and designated hitter Logan Williams both walked (Williams, a bases loaded walk) making it 7-2.  Center fielder Austin Davis added a two-run single to center, and shortstop Josh Day delivered a two-run double.  Two other runs came in on wild pitches.  Mitchell, despite being handed a seven-run first inning lead, didn't get out of the second.  He lasted 1 2/3 innings, and allowed eight runs (all earned)---the most given up by a High Wheeler all season.

The High Wheelers came back and took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth.  Left fielder Jose Gonzalez had the game-deciding hit with a two-out two-run double to center and first baseman Alejandro Figueredo added an RBI single.  Ottinger in defeat gave up three runs (all earned) in 4 2/3 with three strikeouts.

Yolo's bullpen was the story with 7 1/3 shutout innings led by Reed Garland (4-2; 1-0).  He came in in the second and didn't allow a run in 2 2/3. He walked three and struck out five allowing two hits.  It was his first win as a High Wheeler.  Garland said, "I just went out there and pitched.  I trusted my defense and offense."  Jack ZalaskyKris Anglin, and Connor Langrell combined for four strikeouts for the final 3 2/3 frames.

"The bullpen did the job, plain and simple," said Yolo pitching coach Jerome Williams.  Garland was huge to pitch 2 2/3 innings with 69 pitches.  He struggled with his fast ball and then went to his off-speed stuff.  Jack (Zalasky) was Jack and Langrell gave us two innings of solid work."  Zalasky has pitched 7 2/3 innings over his last seven outings without allowing an earned run while Langrell has worked 6 2/3 innings over his last five games with six strikeouts.

The High Wheelers were up 10-8 going to the ninth and added two more runs on a single by Blackford and a wild pitch.  Manager Billy Horton emphasized the importance of insurance runs, "we talk about finishing strong.  We had great at-bats, we worked hard, and Blackford had a big hit."

Game two of this series will be Wednesday at 5:35 PST.  The scheduled starters are right-hander Ben Ferrer for Yolo and lefty Kelsey Ward for Rocky Mountain.

HIGH TALES

Minzey was 1-4 with a run scored against his former teammates
