Resilience wrestles back High Wheelers in K.O. Win II

Resilience wrestles back High Wheelers in K.O. Win II

Davis, Ca.--The Yolo High Wheelers (26-23; 3-0) gave up ten runs, 16 hits and committed a season-high four errors...yet the big number was five, as in a five-run bottom of the ninth inning which tied the game at ten and forced a knockout round for the second straight day.  And again, the High Wheelers behind one homer by left fielder Jose Gonzalez defeated the Oakland Ballers (27-24; 0-3) at Dobbins Stadium on Thursday.  Gonzalez bested Oakland designated hitter Jaylen Smith 1-0.  The High Wheelers are 2-4 this season in knockout rounds.  It was Gonzalez's fifth swing of the first round which ended matters.  The nine-inning portion concluded 10-10.

Gonzalez' heroics wouldn't have been possible if it hadn't been for the five-run ninth.  "It's just resilience," Gonzalez said about the rally.  "I mean one through nine, everyone wants to win, and play everyday.  We call it home field advantage here in Davis because of the heat."

Each of the last two days, Gonzalez homered off Yolo pitching coach Jerome Williams.  "I never really gave up any walk-off homers when I was playing because I gave them up too early (in the game).  But it was a good feeling to go out there and do it again and have Jose win the game for us."

Yolo was down 10-5 heading to the final inning.  It started on a pop up double to left by right fielder Tanner Smith.  Third baseman Kirkland Banks, and catcher Mason Minzey followed with singles.  Minzey's hit scored Smith making it 10-6.  After Oakland's Jake Dahle was unable to retire anyone, Connor Richardson was able to get his first two batters out.  Yolo was down to its last out trailing by four.  Second baseman Bobby Lada hit a two-run double which tightened the deficit to 10-8.  Gonzalez followed Lada with an RBI double to left-center which made it 10-9.  Designated hitter Braedon Blackford walked, putting runners at first and second.  Gonzalez was lifted for pinch runner Kyle Guerra while Blackford departed for pinch runner Alex Epp.  That left it up to first baseman Eddie Niemann who was down to his last strike.  He hit a chopper to Oakland shortstop Josh Leslie.  In his attempt to get what would have been the game-ending force, Leslie's throw to Ballers second baseman Brad Burckel went off the top of his glove.  The ball rolled toward shallow right field and Guerra came around to score, tying the game.  Epp went to third and Niemann who was going to hold at first went to second when Burckel threw to the plate and the ball got away.  Burckel was charged with two errors.  The High Wheelers had runners at second and third and Smith was up again but was walked intentionally.  That set the stage for Banks.  He flew to left-center field, Ballers center fielder Austin Davis, and left fielder Payton Hardin softly collided but Davis made the catch sending the teams to the knockout round.

High Wheelers manager Billy Horton said about the rally, "the players get the credit but God gets the glory."  "We talk about finishing strong, I'm very proud of these guys."

Yolo scored twice in the first on an infield single by Gonzalez and a groundout by Blackford.  In the fifth, they plated two--one on a triple by center fielder Brayland Skinner, and a grounder to short by shortstop Braylin Marine.  The run in the eighth came on a double play ball by Blackford.  Everybody in the starting lineup for Yolo reached base safely.

High Wheelers starter Brandon Mitchell lasted four innings and surrendered ten hits and six runs (both highs for him).  He walked two and struck out one.

Oakland highlights included homers by Davis (9) and Burckel (7).  Third baseman Dondrei Hubbard and Harden each had four hits.  It was Hubbard's first four-hit game, and Harden's second.

The teams meet on Friday at 4:30 PST in Davis.  The scheduled starters are Oakland right-hander Christian Cosby and Yolo righty Ben Ferrer.

HIGH TALES
Yolo's Jimmy Lewis pitched a scoreless ninth inning, not a perfect ninth.  Oakland's Payton Harden reached on an error by Yolo first baseman Eddie Niemann.  However, Harden was quickly erased making a motion toward second base.  Yolo second baseman Bobby Lada picked up the ball that dislodged from Niemann's glove and tagged out Harden.

Marine was 1-5 with an RBI and a run scored, he's batting a team-high .397

Lada had three hits, two RBI's and scored three times.  It was his eighth occurance of at least three hits

Oakland leads the season series 11-10
