High Wheelers Fall Short Despite Late Rally

High Wheelers Fall Short Despite Late Rally

Davis, Ca.---Oakland Ballers (16-13) right fielder Trevor Halsema (7) hit a go-ahead three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning as he helped his club to a 9-6 win over the Yolo High Wheelers (14-12) on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.  Halsema finished with three hits (homer, single, double) and four RBI's.  The RBI's matched his season high for one game.

Yolo led 2-0 going to the fourth.  Oakland center fielder Austin Davis led off with a walk.  He'd later score when shortstop Myles Jefferson reached on a fielding error by High Wheelers third baseman Braedon Blackford.  It was Halsema who followed Jefferson with the round-tripper.  The final run of the fourth came in on a ground out by Oakland second baseman Jaylen Smith.

The Ballers would not relinquish the lead despite the High Wheelers knocking on the door.  Yolo hit a pair of homers:  a solo by first baseman Jose Gonzalez (7) in the fifth and a two-run clout by left fielder Justin Kirby (3) in the seventh.  Kirby's homer made it 7-6 Oakland.  However, the visitors would add single runs in the eighth and ninth pushing it to 9-6.

Oakland starter Derrick Cherry allowed two runs (both earned) over three innings.  He struck out two.  The second Ballers pitcher Brody Eglite (2-0) earned the win.  Eglite struck out two in 2 2/3 innings giving up two runs (both earned).  Chandler David (1) pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his first professional save.

Brandon Mitchell (1-1) suffered the loss for Yolo allowing all five runs (four earned) in the fourth.  The left-hander struck out four in as many innings.

Yolo leads the series 3-2.  The final game of this set is Sunday afternoon in Davis at 1:05 PST.  Right-hander Aaron Eden will get the start for Oakland against Yolo righty Ben Ferrer.
