Vibes Drop Series Opener in 6 HR Contest

By Tyler Petersen

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  – A power display from the Grand Junction Rockies tipped the scales early in a 13-5 defeat on Tuesday night.

A total of six home runs were hit in the game, five of them by the Rockies.

On a positive note, the game did not feature any of the bedlam that we saw in the previous meeting between these two teams (regular readers will know to what I am referring).

Josh Elvir opened up the scoring with a solo HR in the second and was followed a few batters later by Tyler Sandoval who had a two-run blast.

Down three the Vibes started their attack. Domonique Hernandez homered to left field, a solo shot for his seventh of the season. Ulysses Cantu added an RBI single and the Vibes were down 3-2 after the top of the third.

Then more big flies. Three more, in fact.

Casey Petersen had a three-run home run to centerfield in the fourth.

Fresh off the injured list Jaylen Hubbard hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Joe Johnson finished off the derby with a three-run home run in the eighth.

It was a 13-5 final at the end of the night.

One other bright spot for the Vibes today was another debut. In the bottom of the ninth, Ulises Nunez, an outfielder just added to the roster today, pinch-hit for Brandon Perez and got his first Pioneer League hit, a single up the middle. He later came around to score on Cantu's second RBI single of the night, which drove in two.

The Vibes are now 3-3, a game and a half behind these first-place Rockies. First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
