High Wheelers struggle to capitalize on loaded chances

The Northern Colorado Owlz (14-5) took advantage of two two-out walks and two errors in the bottom of the sixth and came back to beat the Yolo High Wheelers (7-9) 6-2 on Tuesday night at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium in Windsor, Colorado.

Yolo led in the sixth when High Wheelers starter Cameron Repetti (1-1) walked Owlz designated hitter Dave Matthews and second baseman Kevin Jimenez.  Both advanced when Yolo catcher Angel Mendoza tried to pick off Matthews at second base.  Third baseman Omar Ortiz bounced a ball to High Wheelers shortstop Braylin Marine but his throw was not picked at first by Sam Kuchinski, the ball got away and both runs scored on the error by Marine which made it 3-2 Owlz.

After Yolo left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Northern Colorado took advantage, adding three runs.  Center fielder Dario Gomez had an RBI single and two batters later, Matthews delivered a two-run single.

The High Wheelers had plenty of chances as they had 13 hits and stranded ten.  Both Yolo runs were courtesy of left fielder Justin Kirby (1) who hit his first pro homer, that was in the second.  His sacrifice fly was in the sixth.

Repetti struck out nine matching Dawson Lane for most by a High Wheeler pitcher this year.  He lasted 5 2/3 innings, issued three hits and three runs (one earned).

Chase Jessee (3-0) allowed 11 hits but kept the damage to two runs (both earned) in 6 2/3 innings.

The second game of this series is Wednesday night at 5:15 PST.  Left-hander Dawson Lane (0-1) will start for Yolo.  Northern Colorado has yet to announce its pitcher.
