Hot Start leaves Yolo in the dust, 19-7 loss

Hot Start leaves Yolo in the dust, 19-7 loss

Davis, Ca.---Rocky Mountain Vibes (21-25) center fielder Brett Carson led off Sunday's game at Dobbins Stadium with a single to right.  And his teammates kept right on following in a 19-7 win over the Yolo High Wheelers (23-23) in the final first half game for both.  Carson would eventually score as part of a five-run opening stanza.  The Vibes sent ten to the plate in the inning.  The run-producing plays were courtesy of a single by second baseman Ernie Yake (12 hits in the series), an error by Yolo third baseman Kyle Guerra scored two runs, and two-run single by designated hitter Mason Sykes.  All nine starters for Rocky Mountain reached base safely in the game with eight having at least a hit.  Despite all the offense, it was easy to pick a star for the Vibes.  It was Sykes who was five-for-six with six RBI's, both professional highs.

The 19 runs were the most allowed by Yolo in a game and the 17 hits given up matched a high.

The visitors added five more in the fourth sending up nine.  Left fielder Steven Wilmer drew a bases loaded walk, Sykes had a two-run single and catcher Austin Chouinard chipped in with an RBI single.  Also a wild pitch plated one.

Rocky Mountain tallied three runs apiece in innings six, seven, and nine.  In the ninth, right fielder Stephen Rivas (16), and shortstop Josh Day (11) hit back-to-back homers.  It was Rivas' third homer of the series adding to his team-high overall.  His home run on Sunday was a two-run clout.

Max Powers (1-3) earned his first professional win.  The Rocky Mountain left-handed starter struck out five over six innings.  He gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits.

Yolo starter JC Ariza (0-4) suffered the loss.  In three innings he issued five runs (one earned).  Ariza issued five hits, walked three and struck out two.  The High Wheelers used eight pitchers including Guerra who moved to the hill in the ninth giving up two runs.

The lone Yolo highlight was a ninth inning Grand Slam by left fielder Jose Gonzalez (10).  He has hit safely in his last seven games and reached base safely in his last 20 contests.

First baseman Eddie Niemann had three hits.  His first week with the club he has a six-game hitting streak and is 10-21 (.476) with eight RBI's.

Yolo starts the second half on Tuesday night in Davis against the Oakland Ballers.  Right-hander Justin Kleinsorge takes the ball for Oakland against Yolo righty Cameron Repetti.

HIGH TALES
Guerra was playing his first game at third for Yolo.  The last time he played third with any consistency was his senior year at San Leandro High School

Mason Minzey made his first start/appearance in left field for Yolo.  He played left and right last season "on occasion" with Williamsport in the MLB Draft League

Jimmy Lewis made his Yolo debut.  The right-hander gave up three runs (all earned) in one inning--pitching the sixth

The Grand Slam for Gonzalez was the team's fourth this year.  Bobby Lada, Braedon Blackford, and Kirkland Banks have the others

Yolo won the series 5-2 and lead the season set 6-4.  The teams meet for six games in Colorado Springs from July 30-August 4th
