Second Shutout for Yolo in crushing win
Davis, Ca.---Yolo High Wheelers (29-26; 6-3) starting pitcher Ben Ferrer (5-3) struck out eight over 6 2/3 shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Oakland Ballers (30-27; 3-6) on Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. It was the second shutout for Yolo this year who also blanked Oakland on June 21st in Davis.
It was a pitchers duel through five innings between Ferrer and Oakland starter Zach St. Pierre (2-3) and was the first time in the 27 games between the two clubs where they were scoreless through four innings.
Ferrer has faced Oakland seven times and spoke about pitching against them regularly, "you just have to change your game plan almost every time. You have to keep them off balance, know what gets them out." The only trouble for Ferrer was the fourth inning when the Ballers had runners at second and third with one out, he added, "I buckled down and struck out Lozano (Ballers catcher Tyler Lozano) on a slider. I was looking for a strikeout and then was fortunate to get out of it with an infield pop up."
Yolo manager Billy Horton talked about Ferrer, "Ben pitched excellent today. He did a terrific job keeping them off-balance with a great mix of pitches."
Newcomer David Glancy pinch hit leading off the bottom of the sixth for Yolo. In his first professional at-bat he doubled off the left-center field fence. After the next two batters made an out, Glancy was at third base when first baseman Alejandro Figueredo singled to center driving in Glancy making it 1-0. Designated hitter Eddie Niemann extended his hitting streak to six and on-base streak to 13 games (every game he's played for Yolo) on a single to center which moved Figueredo to second. Right fielder Tanner Smith capped the inning with a two-run double giving the High Wheelers a 3-0 advantage.
"It was an awesome at-bat by David to get us going and start our rally," Horton said. "I was so proud of him and it's always fun to watch someone get their first professional hit."
Glancy said there were no nerves entering his first pro plate appearance, "I just wanted to go up there and be aggressive when I pinch hit," he said. "I got a fastball I could do damage with. I knew I got it really well, the center fielder decoyed me a little bit. It came off really well off the bat."
Relievers Kris Anglin, Reed Garland, and Ty Buckner (7) combined for 2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts to preserve the shutout. It was Buckner's third straight outing notching a save--his seven saves are tied for first in the Pioneer League.
This completes a 16-game homestand (High Wheelers were 11-5) and 19 games this month in Davis who now hit the road for 21 consecutive games (three in Oakland, six apiece at Rocky Mountain, Northern Colorado, and Grand Junction). The voyage starts Friday night at Raimondi Park in Oakland at 6:35. Right-hander Brendan Knoll will start for Yolo against Oakland righty Christian Cosby.
