Back-to-back-back homers hurt High Wheelers
Davis, Ca.--The Oakland Ballers (22-16) scored four times in the fifth hitting back-to-back-back homers as they broke the game open and defeated the Yolo High Wheelers (16-19) 9-5 on Wednesday morning at Dobbins Stadium.
It was 4-3 Oakland going to the fifth and with one out, third baseman Dondrei Hubbard walked. Designated hitter Jaylen Smith (6) followed with a two-run homer to left making it 6-3. Second baseman Myles Jefferson (3) and first baseman Noah Martinez (5) each followed with round-trippers upping the Ballers advantage to 8-3. It was the first time in Oakland history with three straight homers. All of them were against Yolo starter Dawson Lane (0-3) who through his first 27 innings this year had allowed one homer.
All three of Lane's defeats are against Oakland. He struck out six in five innings, gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits. The High Wheelers have allowed the opposition to score four or more runs in an inning in six straight games.
Yolo made it interesting in the ninth, scoring twice but after a mid-inning pitching change, the Ballers Chandler David (5) came on with the bases loaded and got the final two outs. He has saves in each game this series and four of his five "rescues" this year are against Yolo.
High Wheelers highlights included a solo homer by left fielder Braedon Blackford (5). His last five hits have been for extra bases. Designated hitter Jose Gonzalez had an RBI single in the first which extended his hitting streak to 12.
The winning pitcher for Oakland was Brody Eglite (4-0). He pitched two shutout innings (fifth & sixth)and struck out two. Ballers starter, Justin Kleinsorge issued three runs (all earned) in four innings and struck out three.
Oakland has won the last four in this series. The teams conclude Yolo home portion tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PST. Oakland righty Carson Lambert gets the start against Yolo right-hander Brandon McPherson.
