Franchise Records set with 19-8 win
Davis, Ca.---The Yolo High Wheelers (2-2) used a seven-run and nine-run inning as they knocked off the Grand Junction Jackalopes (1-5) 19-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. All nine High Wheelers in the starting lineup had at least one hit, reached base safely two or more times, and while everyone scored, eight-of-the nine crossed the plate two times or better. Two players had four hits and six accomplished multi-hits. Eight-of-the nine one RBI or more. The High Wheelers had 21 hits.
Although the team is only four games old, franchise records were set with runs scored, hits, individual hits in a game, and the first homer in team history was swatted by second baseman Bobby Lada (1)--and not just any homer, a Grand Slam which capped the nine-run eighth inning. He finished a triple shy of cycle going 4-6 also collecting a two-run double.
Yolo trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the third but erupted for seven runs sending 12 to the plate. Two of the run-producing hits were the double by Lada, and two-run single by catcher Angel Mendoza.
Aside from Lada, other runs in the eighth included a two-run triple by center fielder Brayland Skinner, RBI single by shortstop Braylin Marine (four hits overall--all singles), and left fielder Tanner Smith snapped an 0-15 season-start with an RBI single. Third baseman Kirkland Banks had an RBI in that inning as he got by a pitch with the bases loaded. The High Wheelers had 14 batters in that inning. Marine had two RBI's and scored four times.
Right fielder Justin Kirby who was signed early in the day was 2-6 with two singles, a stolen base, and scored once.
Yolo starter Cameron Repetti worked four innings, gave up seven hits, four runs (all earned), and struck out three. Jack Zalasky (1-0) recorded his first professional win. He allowed three runs (all earned) in 1 1/3 innings.
The two teams reconvene on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. PST first pitch in Davis. Grand Junction will send right-hander Jonathan Tyler (0-0) to the hill. He will oppose Yolo lefty Dawson Lane who will make his first appearance this season.
