Four-run rally falls short in 8-7 loss to Vibes

Davis, Ca.---Rocky Mountain Vibes (20-23) shortstop Josh Day's RBI triple in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the difference in an 8-7 win over the Yolo High Wheelers (21-22) on Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

Yolo was down 6-2 going to the bottom of the eighth and rallied to tie with a four-run frame.  The first five High Wheelers reached, part of that was a two-run single to left by right fielder Tanner Smith.  Yolo had two runs in and the bases loaded with nobody out, after two pop outs to second, center fielder Brayland Skinner tied matters at six on a two-run single to left.

However, in the ninth, Yolo reliever Ty Buckner (0-1) walked Rocky Mountain first baseman Eddie McCabe on a full-count leading off.  Next it was Day who ripped a ball toward right-center, Skinner made a gallant effort with a dive but it went for a run-producing three-base hit.  The Vibes added insurance when right fielder Stephen Rivas hit into a fielder's choice scoring Day.

In the bottom of the inning, Yolo gave it one more try.  Left fielder Braedon Blackford  who led off the eighth with a single, did the same in the ninth.  After he moved to second on a ground out, first baseman Eddie Niemann drove in Blackford with a single which tightened it to 8-7.  However, Rocky Mountain reliever Kyle Pijaszek (2-0) was able to get the last two outs and preserve the win.

Brandon McPherson was the starter for Yolo.  He lasted five innings, allowed six hits, three runs (all earned) while walking three and striking out one.  It was his sixth straight no-decision.

Pijaszek went the final two innings, issuing three hits and was charged with one run.  Vibes starter Zach Ottinger gave up two runs (both earned) in five innings.  He struck out two.

Left-hander Daniel Nunan gets the ball in the first game for Rocky Mountain against Yolo lefty Brandon Mitchell.  In the nightcap, right-hander Danny Fox will be the starter for the Vibes in his professional debut against High Wheelers righty Ben Ferrer.
