Chukars erase deficits to defeat Yolo
The Idaho Falls Chukars (13-20) erased deficits of four and five runs and defeated the Yolo High Wheelers (15-15) 12-9 on Thursday night at Melaleuca Field.
Yolo was down 2-1 going to the second inning but struck for six runs and sent 12 batters to the plate. Second baseman Kirkland Banks reached on an error to open things and then scored on a triple by right fielder Tanner Smith which tied it. Following Smith, catcher Angel Mendoza grounded out to second which plated Smith making it 3-2 Yolo. Other run-producing hits in the second were a two-run triple by designated hitter Bobby Lada, an RBI single for left fielder Jose Gonzalez, and Banks who was up for the second time in the inning and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, that made it 7-2 Yolo.
The High Wheelers added single runs in fourth and sixth. Gonzalez (8) homered to lead off the sixth making it 9-5. Gonzalez was 4-5 (two singles, triple, homer).
Idaho Falls took the lead for good with five runs in the sixth. The big hit was a two-run check swing single which cleared the right side of the infield by pinch hitter Kevin Johnson. Other runs were on a single by third baseman Roberto Gonzalez, a single for center fielder Tyler Wyatt, and a wild pitch. Gonzalez' hit was the game-decider. The Chukars added a run in the seventh and eighth innings. If your last name is Gonzalez you had a good game, as Roberto was five-for-five (four singles, double). Idaho Falls first baseman Brett Barrera (11) had four more hits including a homer. He has four straight games of at least four hits and ten hits in this series.
Jacob Stobart (4-2) suffered the loss for Yolo. He has lost each of his last two outings. He gave up five runs (two earned) in the sixth. The winner was Idaho Falls reliever Robbie Brown (1-1). Garrett Crowley (4) pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.
