Spirited Ballers Level Series
Davis, Ca.---The Oakland Ballers (17-13) salvaged a split of this six-game series as they scored three times in the top of the seventh and defeated the Yolo High Wheelers (14-13) 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
After Oakland plated one in the first, it made it 4-0 on a two-out bases loaded triple to right-center by right fielder Trevor Halsema.
Yolo was down 5-2 going to the bottom of the sixth and rallied with six straight hitters reaching base with two out to take a brief lead. With one away, first baseman Jose Gonzalez singled. Two batters later, left fielder Justin Kirby walked. Right fielder Tanner Smith followed with an infield single along the third base grass which loaded the bases. Second baseman Kirkland Banks ripped a two-run single to center which made it 5-4 Ballers. Pinch hitter Alejandro Figueredo walked which reloaded the bases. Then it was center fielder Brayland Skinner who gave the High Wheelers a 6-5 advantage with a two-run single to center.
However, the lead was as short-lived as it can get. Leading off the seventh was Oakland center fielder Austin Davis (5) and he homered to left which tied the game. The Ballers took the lead for good later in the inning on a two-out single to right by first baseman Noah Martinez and added insurance when catcher Tyler Lozano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded making it 8-6.
Yolo starter Ben Ferrer struck out six over four innings. He allowed five runs (all earned). Jacob Stobart (4-1) was the losing pitcher giving up three runs in the seventh.
The winning pitcher was Oakland's Jake Dahle (2-1) despite giving up, at the time the go-ahead hit in the sixth. Chandler David (2) earned the save for the second straight day with a perfect ninth.
Aaron Eden, the Oakland starter, departed after issuing six runs (all earned) in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and gave up eight hits.
Yolo hits the road for a six-game series versus Idaho Falls beginning Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. PST. Right-hander Cameron Repetti is the scheduled starter for Yolo while Idaho Falls has yet to announce its pitcher.
