Five Runs Not Enough; Mustangs Fall 14-5

The Mustangs couldn't keep up with an explosive day at the plate for the Voyagers, as Great Falls defeats Billings14-5. 

 

Great Falls (6-14) snaps an eight-game losing streak, and they break the four-game winning streak against the Voyagers. 

 

In the bottom of the 1st, Great Falls center-fielder Ryan McCarthy homered on the first pitch to right field off Mustang (8-14) starting right-hander Jared Kengott (0-3), scoring right-fielder Riley Jepsen, to make it 2-0. 

 

The Voyagers added to their lead in the 2nd, when second-baseman Cal Bocchino doubled to lead it off, and catcher Nick Emmanuel hit him home to make it 3-0. 

 

The Mustangs picked up their first run on a sacrifice fly from center-fielder Taylor Lomack, scoring second-baseman Casey Harford, who doubled to lead off the inning. 

 

Kengott held the Voyagers to a goose-egg in the 3rd, allowing the Mustang bats to get back to the plate quickly. With one out, shortstop Luke Fennelly doubled, followed by a Gave Wurtz double to make it 3-2. 

 

Left-fielder Luke Trueman singled to advance Wurtz, and then Harford flew out to center for a sac-fly to tie it at 3. 

 

The Voyagers picked up three more runs in the fourth, on a two RBI single by Bocchino, and an RBI single by shortstop Matthew Richardson to make it 6-3. 

 

A two-RBI double from left-fielder Jake Malec gave the Voyagers a 5-3 lead in the 5th off right-hander Ty Pohlmann. 

 

Billings picked up a run in the 6th when Wurtz walked and worked his way around the bases, scoring on a passed ball to make it 8-4.

 

In the 7th, left-hander Omar Sanchez surrendered four walks, ,and one hit, and two runs to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs. 

 

The Mustangs did pick up one more run in the 8th, as Wurtz led off the inning with a single, and Trueman followed with an RBI double.
