Early & late scoring rallies get Yolo consecutive game-winning streak
The Yolo High Wheelers (10-10) scored eight early runs, and two late runs as they defeated the Northern Colorado Owlz (15-8) 10-8 on Saturday night at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium.
High Wheelers designated hitter Jose Gonzalez continued his hot hitting in the series (9-18, .500) with an RBI single in the first which made it 1-0. The other run scored when left fielder Kirkland Banks grounded into a double play.
Northern Colorado took the lead with three runs in the bottom of that inning on a pair of homers: a two-run clout by first baseman Jackson Coutts (5,6) and a solo homer from designated hitter Kevin Santiago (4). Coutts added a three-run blast in the seventh as he finished with five RBI's.
In the second, Yolo took the lead for good plating four runs while sending nine to the plate. Right fielder Tanner Smith set the table leading off with a triple. The run-producing plate appearances came via a sacrifice fly by shortstop Bobby Lada, and a two-run double from third baseman Braedon Blackford, and an RBI single by Gonzalez.
That was enough for Yolo starting pitcher Brandon Mitchell (1-0) who earned his first professional win. The left-hander worked a season-high for him six innings, while giving up three runs (all earned). He struck out five.
Things got tight going to the eighth inning with Yolo up 8-7 but first baseman Sam Kuchinski (2) hit a solo homer making 9-7 while Blackford chipped in with a ninth inning RBI double.
With the bullpen overworked in this series, Cameron Repetti (1) who is normally a starter, worked the ninth allowing a run but notched the save.
Mark Tindall (2-2) was the losing pitcher for Northern Colorado.
Yolo has clinched at least a split of this series and will go for the win of this set on Sunday with a 12:05 p.m. PST first pitch. Right-hander Ben Ferrer gets his first start for Yolo against NoCO left-hander Chance Jessee.
