Voyagers Topped By Mustangs in Game One
The Voyagers came up short last night in their series opener against the Billings Mustangs, final score was 7-3.
Trouble started early for the Voyagers and starting pitcher AJ Fritz. Fritz gave up five base hits in the first frame, and Billings capitalized with 5 runs on the board; RBI base hits from Travis Holt, Abe Valdez, and Jason Rooks.
Fritz was able to settle in very well after this first inning, which was relieving to see. After the first fram, AJ went another five innings, only surrenduring two more base hits and no runs on 7 total strikeouts. This was by far Fritz' worst start to a game yet this year, but AJ stayed composed, and went back out and delivered 5 scoreless innings. Poise and composure are two of the best qualities for pitchers in the Pioneer League to have. With such an offensive-leaning league, the pitchers that see continued success in this league are the ones who can have a bad inning, and without blinking, come right back and keep delivering.
The Voyagers put up runs in the 3rd and 6th courtesy of RBI doubles from Xane Washington and Frank Podkul, making the score 5-2. This was quickly nullified, however, as Travis Holt doubled to right center in the top of the 7th to put Billings back up by 5.
The Voyagers put up one more run in the 8th, but it wasn't enough as Trevor Jackson closes the door in the 9th on the Voyagers. Jackson has had our number thus far. He has relieved for an inning in four games against us now, and is still yet to surrender a run or a base-hit.
Great Falls and Billings duels again today, Patrick Maybach and Danny Galvan are the anticpated starters for the 'Stangs and the Voyagers. Start time is 7 PM, and we may be in for a pitchers battle tonight, as both pitchers have been riding a lot of momentum in their last few starts. Patrick Maybach has given up just 2 runs in his last 23 innings pitched, and Danny Galvan is coming off of a start where he went 8 innings, only giving up one run on four hits with one walk and seven K's.
