Great Falls Held Off by Boise in Game 2
The Boise Hawks picked up a victory in game two last night against the Great Falls Voyagers, final score was 8-1. The squads face off again tonight inside Voyagers Stadium for game three at 7 PM.
Danny Galvan and Isaac Mendez were the starters for the Voyagers and the Hawks respectively. Both had great starts to their day. Both pitchers gave up just one run through the first four innings. The Hawks scored first in the second with some singles and good baserunning, RBI for Tyner Hughes. 1B Freddy Rojas Jr tied it up in the bottom of the third with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Boise broke the game open in the top of the 5th with an impressive offensive push. They scored four in the frame, two coming from a Patrick Merino home run to left-center. This offensive run was backed by great pitching for Boise throughout the rest of the game. Starter Isaac Mendez goes 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits, with 4 punchouts and one walk. McFadden, Edwards, and Alfonzo all came in for an inning of relief, all going scoreless. It was a rather quiet night for the Voyagers offense, and Boise's offense continues its unlikely hot streak. Coming into the series, the Hawks ranked last in the Pioneer League in home runs. This series, they already have six through two games.
Some of this could be attributed to pitchers still trying to get used to the new ball in the Pioneer League for the second half of the season. Many pitchers throughout the league have talked about the ways it affects them, and it will certainly be an adjustment period.
Luke Powell, Will Lavin, and Braden Forsyth all make relief appearances, Lavin going 1.2 innings scoreless and Forsyth going the top of the 9th also scoreless. Final score was 8-1, the two teams face off again tonight, Nate Madej gets the nod for Great Falls.
